Fall 2011 Makeup Guide Part One — The Eyes Have It!

Yay for Fall eye makeup!  I always look forward to this time of year because I love the dramatic colors — plums, forest greens, midnight blues, chocolate browns.  I feel like a kid and the bold liners, shadows and mascara are my coloring tools!

Smashbox, Josie Maran, Make Up For Ever and Sue Devitt are introducing Fall 2011 collections that include a dramatic eye and soft cheeks and lips. I have tried at least one eye product from each collection and I have found that beside the beautiful jewel tones, many of the products have really cool features like being long-wearing.

Here is a little description of each collection and a product that I have tried from each:

Smashbox’s Fall 2011 color story is a celebration of the studio’s heritage. It’s about the magic of capturing the perfect close-up—the moment when you see that impeccable shot of a beautiful girl and everything just clicks.

Smashbox Girls On Film Cream Eye Liner & Travel Brush ($28.00 USD) — Create the perfect frame for eyes with this cult-favorite liner that provides totally customizable eye definition. Wait 60 seconds for it to dry or immediately smudge with shadow for extra intensity. Apply it with the included travel brush for perfectly defined eyes in a flash. Cream Eye Liner can also be used as a long-wearing cream shadow for a sexy smoky look.

What I think: This is available in two shades: Blacklight (black with blue pearl) and Sepia (midnight brown with gold pearl).  I have the Blacklight and love how the color easily lays down and the fact that the blue pearl is not too noticeable, so it can be used day or night. And it is very long-wearing.  Visit www.sephora.com or www.smashbox.com to purchase.

Josie Maran’s Fall 2011 Collection contains three Argan-rich products — A 4 eyeshadow and 1 eyeliner compact, a serum foundation and the eye makeup pen described below.

Josie Maran The Rapid Eye Makeup Pen (REM) ($32.00 USD)  features long-wearing Argan gel eyeliner on one end and a mini liner brush on the other. The middle houses a perfectly coordinated Argan eye shadow in a spring-loaded sponge tip applicator for single stroke eye definition. Infused with Josie’s signature ingredient, Argan Oil.

What I think:  This is a perfect for a dramatic on-the-go eye look. The shadow easily applies with the sponge and the eye liner brush dips in the liner for a great thick line.  Perfect for a cat’s eye look.  This is available in 6 color combinations.  I’ve tried the Black liner/Amethyst shadow and love the look. Visit www.sephora.com or www.josiemarancosmetics.com to purchase.

MAKE UP FOR EVER introduces Smoky Couleur, a new collection of eye make up essentials inspired by the rich, jewel tone fabrics seen on the fall 2011 runways. This vibrant new take on an all-time classic provides a number of different ways to wear the eye-catching look and adapt it to every mood, occasion and outfit.

The Smoky Couleur collection includes a limited edition Smoky Eye Shadow Palette, four new shades of dramatic
Smoky Lash mascara and three new ultra-creamy Khol Pencils — all in an array of bold, yet wearable colors.

New Smoky Lash Couleur ($22.00 USD) — The ultimate mascara for volume, length and curl is now available in four new hues. Boasting the same lash boosting formula and unique elastomer fiber brush as the original best seller, Smoky Lash Couleur delivers a dramatic faux lash effect in seconds. Each new shade is extremely concentrated with brown, green, blue and plum pigments so the mascara instantly coats the lashes with intense color.

What I think:  Very cool mascara that is extremely volumizing and really colors lashes, even dark ones like mine!  I have the Dark Blue and the Pearly Deep Blue Khol pencil.  They work great together for an intense shot of color or mix them up. Fun! Purchase at www.sephora.com or www.makeupforever.com.

Sue Devitt’s Nordic Trek, inspired by Iceland A new Eye Palette in muted tones of Deep Moss Shimmer, Glacial Aqua, Arctic Blue, and Nordic Nude was inspired by the deep blue sky meeting the mossy earth and ice along the horizon. And a new Defining Eyeliner in three pigment rich, long lasting, waterproof shades- rich black, chocolate brown and silver-glides on to give an edge to a softer palette. The collection of Color Luxury Lipsticks echoes the colors of the autumn flowers of the lowlands.

Sue Devitt Defining Eyeliner ($20.00 USD) Inspired by our star product—Eye Intensifier Pencil—NEW Defining Eyeliner is an ultra thin, twist-up pencil designed to create a precise line in vibrant colors for an intense look. Its unique formulation hydrates while defining, glides on smoothly in a soft, velvety texture, while locking in color that is long-wearing, transfer resistant, water resistant and smudge proof. Hyaluronic Filling Spheres and Nylon-12 lock in moisture, and expand and contact with facial expressions without creasing. No sharpener required.

What I think:  I love this in the chocolate brown.  It is a deep color and is a nice change from black for daytime.  It glides on smoothly, and doesn’t need to be sharpenend. This liner lasts a long time, too.  Visit www.suedevittbeauty.com to purchase.

Whatever you choose to try, I think you will enjoy your Fall look!

Protect Your Flawless Face With Sue Devitt Primer and Foundation With SPF

Sue Devitt creates beautiful skincare and makeup with sea minerals and blue algae for glowing and natural-looking skin. Many of their foundations have SPF which will protect skin while smoothing it out. My favorites are:

Microquatic™ Blue Anti-Aging SPF 30 Primer ($48.00 USD) — This luxurious anti-aging primer offers skin powerful protection against harmful UVA/UVB rays through SPF 30, infused with soothing Blue Algae Extract to combat redness and naturally formed anti-irritant crystals sourced from the coast of Spain. Protect the future of your skin by stimulating skin’s natural collagen production with this skin primer’s high performance anti-aging ingredients Ceramide 2 and Matrixyl.

What I think: This primer worried me a bit at first because it is a very light blue color and when I first applied it, I thought I saw a light blueish-white cast to my skin. But when I smoothed it on my skin that went away and my skin was smoothed and glowing. My pores and lines also appeared smaller, which is a plus! Very nice primer!

SpaComplexion™ Hydrating Marine Minerals Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 ($40.00 USD) — Achieve a healthy, radiant spa-treated, natural complexion.  This lightweight, mineral tinted moisturizer features extraordinary hydrating and refreshing properties of the sea, encapsulated in a proprietary delivery system that increases skin’s moisture level and vitality. Its sheer, fluid formulation with SPF 15 coverage also offers antioxidant benefits while protecting the skin from harsh environmental exposure and premature photo-aging.

What I think: This is a medium-coverage tinted moisturizer, so although this hydrates the skin, it is also gives good coverage and a very pretty glow. Combining this product with the primer, you not only get a flawless face, but 45 SPF means that you are well protected!

SpaComplexion™ Hydrating Marine Minerals Loose Powder SPF 30 Compact ($32.00 USD) –This skin-protecting loose powder provides a perfect finish, while offering continuous hydration and concentrated environmental protection with SPF 30. A unique formulation offers extraordinary hydrating and refreshing properties of the sea, encapsulated in a proprietary delivery system that increase skin’s moisture level and vitality. Natural-looking, high performance minerals deliver nutrients to the skin in a portable compact with mirror perfect for touch-ups throughout the day.

What I think: What I love about this mineral foundation is that my skin does not feel dry when I apply it. I have a lot of trouble with loose mineral foundation because it tends to settle in my fine lines and pores. Yuck! But this foundation does seem to hydrate and refresh throughout the day. It also looks very natural and not cakey at all.

Sue Devitt Triple C-Weed Whipped Foundation

Triple C-Weed Whipped Foundation

Want a change from your mineral or liquid foundation? Try a mousse foundation. The fluffy texture and good coverage of the Sue Devitt C-Weed Whipped Foundation ($40.00 USD) might be a welcome change from what you are using now!

This is a great foundation for ladies who want their skin to look extra smooth, because it clams to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while evening out skin imperfections and locking in moisture. The Sue Devitt website explains,

“A unique Australian botanical deeply hydrates and replenishes the skin’s own lipid balance up to 20% to restore your natural hydration level instantly. Three types of seaweed revive delicate skin tissue, powerful antioxidant Vitamin C combats free radicals and environmental pollutants, while gentle Chamomile Extract soothes and nurtures. Suitable for all skin types, the Triple C-Weed Whipped Foundation offers medium to full coverage and is oil-free.”

Sue’s Secret Beauty Tip: Warm the luxurious Triple C-Weed Whipped Foundation between fingertips and massage (not rub) a small amount liberally into the skin to allow nourishing vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to penetrate the skin. Use sparingly at first and build to desired level of coverage.

Why I like this: when I apply the mousse, it feels like I am moisturizing my face with a non-greasy moisturizer (that evens out my skin tone). It feels so good on, light and creamy and leaves my skin soft. It also gives a little glow that is not shiny or glittery.

The Triple C-Weed Whipped Foundation is available in 8 shades at www.suedevittbeauty.com. Try it — I think you’ll really like it! —

Sue Devitt Creates Exotically Beautiful Makeup

Australian makeup artist and cosmetic creator Sue Devitt’s personal mantra is “Beauty is an adventure”…with endless destinations. She is inspired by the natural beauty of the many exotic places that she has traveled such as India and Tanzania. Here cosmetics are exotic, but very wearable!

I really love the Sue Devitt Eye Intensifier Pencil ($22.00) This is a thick, smudgey pencil that glides on easily and makes a great smokey eye. The pencil can be drawn on with a thick line for high drama or smudged into a sexy, smoky look. There is a built-in smudger on the end of it that is tapered and can be used to soften the line of the pencil. I found that it lasted all day and stayed put. This great pencil is available in 13 shades.
I have also tried the E-Z Eye Roller Ball Eye Shadow ($18.00), a pure-pigmented roller ball shadow.  It is unusual for a roller ball to go on with so much color — this is definitely not a delicate product: not for the shy! It is very shimmery and although it can be blended for day use, I highly recommend it for the evening. This shadow is available in 10 shades.

Sue Devitt Oxygen Infusion Masque

Oxygen Infusion Masque
Oxygen Infusion Masque

Looking for a different way to cleanse and hydrate your skin? Sue Devitt has recently launched the Oxygen Infused Masque ($40.00), which does just that with a cool little twist.

The masque has self-foaming activation. This means that you massage the bright blue gel to your face and it instantly foams up. I like to leave it on for a couple of minutes before I rinse. It is very fun and the foam tickles a bit.

Through the foaming, oxygen molecules are released into pores then gently cleanse and remove impurities and environmental pollutants.  The claim is that the skin appears firmer, softer and healthy-looking after using the masque. The masque contains an infusion of Microquatic™ Complex, which hydrates while Blue Algae, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein and Chamomile Extract to reduce redness and irritation, and to help control sebum production and soothe the skin.

I like how this product leaves my face very soft and smooth. I like to use it in the evening, but you can use it whenever you wish. It is safe to use every day.

Sue Devitt Oxygen Infusion Masque is available at barneys.com, Harvey Nichols and Facelogic Spas. I recommend this neat product!
